Developmental editing is for the story that is fresh on the page or only a few drafts into the writing process. The key to ever being able to write at all is accepting that the first draft will not be the final draft. With developmental editing, the manuscript gets a huge push toward the final draft. This is where l look at the elements of the story, and not so much the sentence like I would with copyediting. A developmental edit will uncover issues like plot holes, information dumps, or lapses in character motivation. With the developmental edit, I also send an editorial letter containing a summary of recommendations for the manuscript. This also addresses any weaknesses I feel are difficult to accurately approach with comments alone inside the manuscript.
The developmental edit looks for big picture problems in the following areas:
-plot
-story arc
-conflict
-character development (goals and motivations)
-dialogue
-pacing
-structure/organization
-world building
-setting
Developmental editing starts at $0.015/word.
I make all changes using Word's Track Changes tool, and all suggestions are entered using the Comments tool. If you have never used these before, I can provide a document explaining them.
